Item Open Access Cultivating Children’s Social Awareness in The Multicultural and Diverse Community : A Perspective From Empathetic Teaching(Department of Social Science , IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon, 2022-12-30) Popi RoseptiThe multicultural and social diversity urge children to build social awareness skill which drives them to consciously aware of specific range of social experience from a specific point of view. In educational setting, this becomes a concern because children spur into cultural diversity in their daily life so that teachers take a role to facilitate them with the ability to adapt with the situation. One of the ways in meeting the issue is through implementing empathetic teaching which is a concept of teachers showing their compassion to students. Therefore, the main framework of this study is to elaborate the concept and investigate further how empathetic teaching can allow teachers to cultivate social awareness to their students in the perception year. The originality of the paper lies in offering a conceptual framework of empathetic teaching through mapping the main relevant literatures and identifying and engaging with the central theoretical issues while suggesting a perceptual framing of classroom setting in childhood education. By analyzing the data using content analysis, the findings reveal that empathetic teaching practiced by teachers can be beneficial to build children’s social awareness through having good perception on their exposure to the surrounding. This also allows them to have an ability to adapt in the diverse community by appreciating differences to promote a social peaceful life in this contemporary world.Item Open Access Exploring Empathy in The Human Development Perspective and Its Practical Implications Based on The Islamic Foundations(Language Center of Universitas Teuku Umar, 2023-05-28) Popi RoseptiThis study aims to figure out the concept of empathy based on human development perspective and find its practical implication in the Islamic teaching, stated in its fundamental foundations, the Quran and hadiths. The exploration of the issue is based on the purpose to analyze the nature of empathy in human development and to provide a source regarding its implication based on Islamic view. Since the values are presumably derived from humanistic psychology (general knowledge), this study also explores the concept that is linked to the value in Islamic traditions. Descriptive qualitative research using a library study is employed to explore both concepts together with a content analysis for its data representation. The finding shows empathy is primed since infancy and continuously develops following the maturity of each stage of life. They develop similar emotion and process of it but different ways in showing their empathetic behaviors. Connecting to the implication in the Islamic teaching, there are 16 points elaborating the concept of empathy; five from the Quran and 11 from hadiths. Most of them are described in various ways of teaching but still closely relate to human social interaction. The result of this study reveals that both psychology and Islam are similar in defining empathy as a universal value in human life which drives people to the ability of understanding others’ feeling and being compassionate on it.Item Open Access Exploring teacher empathy in early childhood education : perception, understanding, and protices(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2023) Popi Rosepti; Charyna Ayu Rizkyanti; Tati Lathipatud DurriyahThe foundations for learning are built in the early years of life, when children start their first journey of education. During the process, they need other people to be with for helping them to obtain their healthy development. One can do it is teachers whom children are dependent on them at school. Therefore, this study responds to the need by focusing on teachers' perspectives while teaching young children at school. This qualitative study describes the lived experience of nine Indonesian preschool teachers from nine kindergarten schools responding to empathy matters during the teaching process in early childhood education. Informed by Nodding's care relational theory and Cooper's empathy classification in teaching and learning, this study explores the teachers' perception of empathy, their understanding, and their practice in the educational setting. In responding to the first aspect, I addressed the question: "How do teachers perceive the concept of empathy?" and the second research question to the second aspect was: "How do teachers understand empathy in the process of teaching and learning?" following the third research question: "How do teachers practice empathy in the educational setting?". The Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach was used to explore the teachers experiences in answering the three research questions. Data sources were obtained from interviews and observation and analysed using six stage process of the IPA approach. The stages are sorting to the general sense, extracting or finding significant statements, formulating meaning, clustering themes, and repeating the process and culminating to the last step to describe the phenomenon. The first findings related to teachers' perception of empathy reveal a range of themes pertaining to the concept of empathy. It is centered on teachers perception, word frequency, and teachers experience in understanding young children's empathy. The second findings for teachers understanding on empathy in the process of teaching and learning primarily focus on teachers' understanding which is divided into some discussion; empathy in young children, and the role of teacher empathy in education. and the experiences of teacher empathy in teaching. The last finding discusses the teachers' practice of teacher empathy illustrate a range of experiences in dealing with students' traits, the ability to communicate with students and parents, classroom activities to nurture empathy, the constraints and challenges for demonstrating teacher empathy, both from teachers and parents perspectives. This study contributes to policy makers and teacher educators to build a pedagogical framework for early childhood-empathy-based education. It gives an insight into the importance of empathy while developing a learning module for students by involving some empathy aspects in the teaching and learning process. For the upcoming research, the variety of approaches and participants can add richness of data and deeply explore the concept of empathy in education from various settings and different perspectives.Item Open Access The Complexities of the Mother's Role in Providing Early Childhood Learning Experiences for Children with Developmental Delays(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia Press, 2022-12-28) Popi RoseptiThe mothers’ role in bringing up children with developmental delays seems to be challenging. Problems when they decide to access occupational therapy to help their children’s development have been revealed. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the common complexities that mothers experience while taking their children to occupational therapy as a rehabilitation program to deal with developmental delays. As well, it also describes mothers’ personal efforts in tackling those complexities. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight mothers and Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze the data as proposed by the phenomenological approach. The results reveal that mothers experience complexities when their children are diagnosed as having developmental delays. These include sadness and shock, panic and confusion, and guilt. Other difficulties include time management, cost demands, and support systems related to the therapy process. In tackling those complexities, mothers need to build their capacity for self-efficacy and self-empowerment as well as try to accept their children’s condition and to change habits as recommended by therapists. Not only describing the phenomenon, this study also analyzed some developmental screening tests applied in different countries to come up with new models of preventive actions in Indonesia.
