Item Open Access A portrait of multicultural education in an Indonesian private school : perception, approach, and implementation(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2023) Ririn Karina Nur'aeni; Tati Lathipatud Durriyah; Bambang SumintonoIndonesia is a multicultural country with a wide range of religions, races, ethnicities, cultures, and languages. Because of a lack of understanding in Indonesia of the value of plurality, these differences frequently serve as the reason for inter-community clashes. This research focuses on these issues in the context of multicultural education in schools. Schools, in addition to family education, play an important role in nurturing students to understand, tolerate, and respect diversity. In this regard, this study explores how school community perceives, approaches, and implements multicultural education as an attempt to create multicultural citizens. This study employed qualitative approach using case study design in Indonesian private school in West Java. It involved seven participants from different backgrounds to gain their perspective regarding multicultural education. Documentary research and observation were also conducted to collect the data. The validity and reliability were assured through triangulation and member checking as an attempt to keep data trustworthy. In doing the analysis, the Quirkos software was used as an effective analytical tool. In addition, some ethical issues and research positionality were also stated. The following conclusions have been reached based on the evidence: First, principal, teachers, students, perceive that education must address student differences. They believe that God create diversity intentionally. They also believe uniqueness of human being and the diversity that exists in Indonesia. Second, the school community translated their perception into school vision, mission, and the projected rules. School also provides teacher development, curriculum design, and educational services as the strategies to promote multicultural education. Third, the implementation of multicultural education was manifested through the school culture, integrated curriculum, teachers' critical pedagogy and the annual cultural exhibition.Item Open Access A Rasch analysis of the International Personality Item Pool Big Five Markers Questionnaire : Is longer better?(University of Novi Sad, 2023-05-24) Hanif Akhtar; Bambang SumintonoThe 50-item International Personality Item Pool version of the Big Five Markers (IPIP-BFM) is an open-source and widely used measure of the big five personality traits. A short version of this measure (IPIP-BFM-25) has been developed using the classical test theory approach. No study was performed to examine the psychometric properties of a longer and shorter version of IPIP-BFM Indonesia using modern test theory. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of IPIP-BFM as well as IPIP-BFM-25 using Rasch analysis. The analysis was conducted in order to test their dimensionality, rating scale functioning, item properties, person responses, targeting, reliability, and item bias on 1003 Indonesian samples. The findings showed that both IPIP-BFM and IPIP-BFM-25 Indonesia have some adequate psychometric properties, especially regarding category function, item properties, reliability, and item bias. However, the emotional stability and intellect scales did not meet the assumption of unidimensionality, and all items on the scales were too easy to endorse by participants. In general, longer measures outperformed shorter measures in terms of person separation and reliability. Kajian ini bertujuan menguji kesahan kandungan Instrumen Kompetensi Guru untuk Melaksanakan Pentaksiran Bilik Darjah (IkomGuruPBD) dengan menggunakan analisis Model Rasch Pelbagai Faset (MRPF). IkomGuruPBD terdiri daripada 56 item yang dibina berdasarkan 3 konstruk utama iaitu Pengetahuan PBD, Kemahiran PBD dan Sikap terhadap PBD. Reka bentuk kajian adalah kaedah tinjauan kuantitatif dengan pendekatan penilai berganda (multirater) menggunakan soal selidik IkomGuruPBD yang telah diedarkan kepada 12 orang panel pakar. Setiap pakar perlu menentukan tahap persetujuan mereka tentang kesesuaian setiap item dengan menggunakan skala Likert 3 mata terhadap tiga aspek penilaian bagi setiap item. Dapatan menunjukkan antara kelebihan MRPF adalah boleh menentukan tahap ketegasan penilai dan konsistensi penilai, juga mendapati dapatan respon luar jangkaan. Walaupun setiap penilai diberi instrumen, aspek penilaian dan kategori skala yang sama, namun MRPF boleh membandingkan tahap ketegasan secara individu bagi setiap penilai. MRPF juga boleh mengesan kualiti item untuk membantu pengkaji mengenal pasti item yang baik dan item yang lemah untuk ditambah baik. MRPF mempunyai kelebihan untuk memberikan maklumat yang lengkap mengenai ciri psikometrik bagi IkomGuruPBD yang diuji.Item Open Access Attraction of Authority: The Indonesian Experience of Educational Decentralization(Springer, 2023-07-14) Bambang Sumintono; Hasan Hariri; Umi Anugerah IzzatiThe fall of the New Order government in 1998 changed the landscape of Indonesian education from a highly centralized system to a decentralized one. With this paradigm shift, district governments received a transfer of power in most public sectors in 2001, including education. The central questions in this chapter are: (1) How has Indonesia managed education in the decentralization era? and (2) How has the country managed the changes so far? Four key issues are discussed, namely, new regime of standardization, school operational cost, teachers and principals, and National Exam. We argue that Indonesian educational decentralization has mostly been about legitimacy and authority dialectics between local/district and central institutions. Moving from a highly centralized system to a more locally oriented one contests the legitimacy of each actor involved, resulting in competition for resources and survival. Nevertheless, we also identified some advances in terms of social justice and student learning support in this process of decentralization.Item Open Access Beyond the charisma of Islamic boarding school leaders : countering potential abuse through enhancing critical thinking and critical dialogical abilities of the 'led'(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2023) Supriyono; Bambang Sumintono; Lukman Nul HakimIn response to the pressing call for enhancing the critical thinking and critical dialogical abilities of the students at pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Indonesia, this study delves into the 'dark side' of charismatic leadership commonly adopted by these *indigenous Islamic educational institutions. The inquiries stem from rising reports of sexual abuse at pesantren institutions and scrutinize the romanticized axiom of charisma in leadership that is often overshadowed by extreme admiration, blind idolization, and unquestioning obedience, which leads to sparing limited or even no room for the followers to question and criticize, making them vulnerable to power abuse. Hence, this study draws upon the insights of 24 participants from two pesantren institutions in East Java, probing their perceptions, practices, and reflections on charisma and obedience, A multiple case study design is employed within a qualitative research framework, utilizing document analysis, focused group discussions, interviews, and observations for the data collection. Triangulation techniques in both data collection and data sources are used for validation to enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of the data, which is analyzed using software-based thematic analysis through Quirkos. This study also addresses ethical considerations and the researcher's positionality to maintain academic integrity and methodological rigor. The findings suggest that the student's critical thinking and dialogical capabilities are not a mere function of the leadership style in pesantren. Rather, these aspects span a broader spectrum, hinging on the Islamic educational models that they adopt, here contested by adab (moral disciplining) and tarbiyah (critical dialogue). Exclusive reliance on adab leads to unbalanced charismatic leadership, fostering a patriarchal culture conducive to power abuse, including sexual abuse. Conversely, combining both adab and tarbiyah promotes a balanced charismatic leadership where adab (moral) forms the basis while critical thinking and dialogue serve as control mechanisms. In practice, critical thinking acts as an alarm, enabling students to discern whether their leaders' commands align with Islamic principles, while critical dialogical abilities serve as a countermeasure, empowering students to assertively challenge potential misconduct. This research highlights the importance of the control element in charismatic leadership, complementing the three components suggested by previous studies: basis, emotional connection, and signaling communication. Consequently, these findings lay the groundwork for further research to delve deeper into the dark side of charismatic leadership in the Islamic school setting, given that charisma meets religiosity could yield benefits on one hand, but potentially negative consequences on the other.Item Open Access Development and validation of students’ competency instrument on science process skills(Atlantis Press, 2024-08-22) Ellyza Karim; Syakima Ilyana Ibrahim; Hanani Harun Rasit; Bambang SumintonoScience process skills are fundamental to science learning and consequently promote scientific literacy among students. Scientists use these skills to construct knowledge during investigation. Thus, science process skills should be acquired not only by scientists, but by all individuals. This study reviews the validity and reliability of an instrument development for science process skills usinginterval rating scale as answer choice ranging from poor to excellent. This instrument was developed based on the perception of 300 respondents who were the primary school leavers, aged thirteen. As the instrument was newly developed, a pilot study was conducted to determine the empirical proof on the validity and reliability of the test. A total of 68 items were constructed in the test using verified indicators based on the experts and literature reviews. Rasch Measurement Model was employed to analyse the data. Overall, the person reliability is found at 0.97 while the item reliability is 0.99. The range of Point Measure Correlation (PMC) is positive between 0.33 to 0.67 for all items. All items are accepted as the outfit mean square (MNSQ) has the range between 0.59 and 1.55 while the infit MNSQ is between 0.74 to 1.56 indicating a good measure of latent variables for item fit. Based on the item map, the findings suggest that, for experimenting skill, only 11% of students could design scientific steps independently. Meanwhile, for using space and time relationship skill, respondents reported that the item ‘determination for the object position with time’ was the most excellent item. The scale used in this instrument was also found to adequately measure the latent constructs of science process skills.Item Open Access Digital competency mapping dataset of pre-service teachers in Indonesia(Elsevier, 2023-05-05) Muhammad Luthfi Hidayat; Hariyatmi; Dwi Setyo Astuti; Bambang Sumintono; Meccawy, Maram; Khanzada, Tariq J.S.This dataset used the Digital Competency Scale (DCS) to describe Indonesian pre-service teachers’ perceptions. The DCS instrument consisted of five constructs/dimensions, which are: 1) data and information literacy, 2) communication and collaboration, 3) digital content creation, 4) safety, and 5) problem-solving, with a total of 36 items using five-point agreement Likert scale. The data was gathered from 23 education and teacher training faculties at Muhammadiyah Universities in 14 provinces across Indonesia in the academic year 2021/2022. A total of 1400 students (18 to 23 years old) in their first to fifth years of study were recruited using the convenience sampling technique, where they participated in filling in the survey electronically using Google Form. The dataset was analysed with the Rasch model measurement approach using WINSTEPS version 5.2.3 software for data cleaning and validation, and reliability and validity testing of the instrument. This dataset analysis can help teacher-training institutions, or higher education policymakers design effective programmes to improve pre-service teachers' digital competencies. Furthermore, researchers can compare this dataset with more rigorous data from other countries.Item Open Access Exploration of leadership development challenges among MARA college lecturers(2024) Norashdimah Misdi; Fadzliyati Kamaruddin; Zuraidah Abdullah; Bambang SumintonoThe educational change in the 21st Century has resulted in more dynamic leadership among educators. Thus, the issue of challenges in terms of leadership among educators becomes the focus of the present study. The purpose of this study is to explore the challenges faced by MARA College lecturers in an effort to improve their leadership level. The research design uses a qualitative method involving two instruments, namely an open-ended questionnaire and a face-to-face structured interview. A total of 37 lecturers from four MARA colleges, consisting of 9 males and 28 females participated in this study. The findings identified several factors that hinder the development of leadership among the lecturers at MARA College. It was discovered that factors such as time constraints, an unsupportive environment, and the level of lecturers' readiness became obstacles for the lecturers at MARA College to conduct action research related to T&L activity. Furthermore, feeling insecure and being negative are the internal factors, in addition to negative reactions from peers around, that also prevent the lecturers of MARA College from carrying out their knowledge-sharing activities. Thus, the management and lecturers at MARA College are advised to collectively evaluate and pay attention to action research activities that address local problems so that the learning atmosphere among lecturers can be strengthened and this can subsequently empower leadership among lecturers at MARA CollegeItem Open Access Exploring principals' professional development : a case study of public madrasahs in Indonesia(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2023) Fadla Tsania Agustia; Didin Syafruddin; Bambang SumintonoThe quality gap between public general schools and public madrasahs remains an issue of concern. Madrasah principals as the backbone of madrasah are required to enhance their competences through continuous professional development to bring about improvement. Regarding this matter, the study aimed to investigate: 1) the professional development of public madrasah principals; 2) the public madrasah principals’ perceptions on the professional development; and 3) the benefits of professional development in improving the public madrasah principals’ leadership duties. The study is significant because it sheds light on leadership professional development particularly in Indonesian public madrasahs. In addition, the study promotes knowledge sharing and idea generation among madrasah principals. Employing qualitative case study design, the study obtained the data from semi-structured interviews and documents issued by Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA). Three public madrasah principals from a city in Indonesia were interviewed to explore the professional development they have done as well as their perceptions on its implementation and benefits. The documents examined were the guidelines of madrasah principals’ appointment, continuous professional development, madrasah principals’ forum and training modules. The data were analyzed through a six-step thematic analysis that consists of getting familiar with the data, coding, searching themes, reviewing themes, defining themes and making the report. The findings revealed that: 1) The public madrasah principals developed their professionalism through a series of learning programs conducted by MoRA or other institutions, postgraduate study, madrasah principals’ forum, research and collaborations; 2) The public madrasah principals considered professional development important for upgrading skills and knowledge and they found MoRA’s trainings useful and applicable despite its limitations; 3) The public madrasah principals thought that the professional development has benefited them in executing their daily tasks, such as supervision and administration. To conclude, professional development is crucial in enhancing public madrasah principals’ competences. The results indicated that the public madrasah principals had their own comprehension on the leadership areas that were enhanced through professional development. It was also found that the public madrasah principals perceived the advantages of professional development based on their individual needs. The study provides important insights to governing bodies on better management and need assessment of professional development programs for Islamic-based schools’ leadership. The madrasah principals are suggested to maximize their potentials and resources in developing their professionalism and competences. Since the study only focused on public madrasah, future studies can explore further from the perspective of private madrasah and hire more school members as participants to yield various findings.Item Open Access Exploring student's perspectives on the benefits and challenges on the adaption of the Internet of Things : a case study in an Indonesian University(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2023) Cut Manda Sari; Destina Wahyu Winarti; Bambang SumintonoThe 21st century is a century characterized by a vision and mission that emphasizes technology applications in organizing human activities. Currently, many Indonesian universities have begun to integrate, incorporate and adopt the IoT applications and devices into their academic programs. However, there are limited scientific discussions and research on IoT implementation in education within Indonesian University pose an opportunity for further exploration and advancement in this area. This study aims to address this gap by investigating students' perspectives on the benefits and challenges of IoT implementation in higher education, specifically, the research focuses on a university that have integrated and utilized IoT to support students in their academic processes. This research utilized a qualitative case study design to conduct a comprehensive analysis of students' perspectives on IoT applications. The survey findings indicate that students express a significant level of satisfaction with IoT services in terms of benefits such as quicker access to resources and improved research and learning experiences. The adoption of smart boards in classrooms enhances learning effectiveness and creates a dynamic environment. Students recognize the importance of technological fluency and a digital mindset and appreciate user-friendly interfaces. owever, challenges include the lack of clear guidelines, unstable internet connectivity, and system errors. Furthermore, students also recognize the importance of technological fluency and the development of strong technical skills to adapt to the advancements in technology. Students also highlight the positive impact of IoT on classroom management, collaborative learning, and skill development. IoT devices contribute to an easy and efficient learning process, sparking curiosity and motivation. IoT tools improve academic tasks, access to information, and overall achievements. While some challenges exist, personal exploration, peer assistance, and attending workshops help overcome them. Expectations revolve around comprehensive education, improved system quality, and expanded IoT integration. In conclusions, it is recommend adopt a technology system that facilitates the assessment of these perceptions. By using a technology system, organizations can collect data and insights from staff IT members through surveys, interviews, or other feedback mechanisms.Item Open Access Exploring teacher collaboration: what's inside the Malaysian PLC black box?(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2023-10-30) Zuliana Mohd Zabidi; Zuraidah Abdullah; Bambang SumintonoPurpose – The purpose of this study is to explore mathematics teachers’ collaboration within their professional learning communities (PLCs), and to gain insight into how the teachers developed their collective efficacy through it to focus on improving student learning. Design/methodology/approach – Using a qualitative approach, data were collected from three high- performing secondary schools, mainly through semi-structured in-depth interviews with the Heads of Mathematics Unit. For explication and triangulation purposes, focus group interviews with the mathematics teachers and students and document analysis were also conducted. Findings – The findings indicate that PLCs were the vessel through which a culture of disciplined teacher collaboration was fostered. More importantly, this culture encouraged teachers to participate in reflective dialogues that became a driver for their learning, and eventually led to their changed professional practice for improved student learning. The collaborative setting within the PLCs allowed teachers to pool their resources, knowledge and individual expertise to identify their student learning focus, and administer and measure their student intervention strategies. This collaborative professional learning reduced professional isolation, and as a result, improved teachers’ collective pursuit of professional growth to impact student outcomes. Research limitations/implications – The aim of this qualitative study was to provide a detailed description of the teachers’ collaboration within their PLCs based on the researchers’ interpretation of how the participants make sense of their PLC practices and experiences. Hence, findings are indicative, and not definitive. In addition, the Heads of the Mathematics Unit, and the mathematics teacher participants in this study illustrated salient aspects of subject subcultures, where their beliefs, norms and practices were non- generic, or specific only to their subject context. Therefore, the implications to practice were built from commonalities shared only among the mathematics units. Originality/value – This is a study in a Malaysian context that provides empirical evidences that are concerned primarily with the process of teachers developing their collective efficacy through disciplined collaboration within their PLCs.Item Open Access Exploring the head of the foundation's leadership practices in optimizing teachers' performance at islamic private school(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2023) Dwi Asih Prihatin; Bambang Sumintono; Lukman Nul HakimDual authorities govern the education system in Indonesia: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (MoECRT) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA). These distinct authorities significantly influence the leadership structure that governs the school system, particularly in managing educational units through foundations. This study focuses on a privately-owned Islamic institution operating under the auspices of the MoECRT. This study investigates the leadership practices of the head of the foundation in Islamic private schools and the impact on optimizing teachers' performance. The main focus lies in identifying and analyzing the leadership practices, strategies, and mechanisms employed by the foundation's leader to enhance teaching and learning practices in Islamic private schools. This qualitative study was conducted at one Islamic Private School in Indonesia. The researcher utilized a case study approach, conducting open-ended interviews and observations to gather information related to the research questions. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. The present study incorporated four different leadership styles: Directive, Supportive, Participative, and Achievement-oriented, as delineated in the theoretical framework. The findings of the study indicate that the person in the top leadership position within the foundation demonstrates a prominent Directive leadership style, as observed through the daily interactions with his subordinates. This leadership style is distinguished by a dominating attitude in decision-making and guiding subordinates. Additionally, this study provides insights into the effects of internal and external encouragement on the teachers' teaching and learning process, as facilitated by the head of the foundation. Finally, it examines teachers' perspectives regarding the overpowering engagement of the head of the foundation. It is essential to note that the findings of this study do not aim to determine whether one leadership style is better or worse than others. Each leadership style has its strengths and weaknesses, and its implementation should be tailored to the context and organizational needs. This study offers practical implications for enhancing teacher effectiveness, developing leadership skills, and fostering a positive educational environment. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute to the advancement of Islamic education by promoting continuous improvement and adherence to Islamic principles and values.Item Embargo Exploring the role of peer relationships in student wellbeing : a case study of female students in junior high school at a modern pesantren in Indonesia(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2024) Salsabila Abdul Ghofur; Bambang Sumintono; Tati Lathipatud DurriyahThe well-being of students in educational institutions is influenced by many factors including their peer relationships. In the context of a modern Pesantren—an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia—these relationships are especially significant due to the close-knit communal living arrangements and the integration of religious and modern education. This study aims to explore the dynamics of peer relationships among female students in a modern Pesantren and examine their impact on various aspects of student well-being, including social relationships, emotional support, self-perception, autonomy, and mental health. A qualitative methodology was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with a purposively selected sample of female students at a modern Pesantren in Indonesia. Additionally, observation and focus group discussions were utilized to triangulate the data. The findings reveal that supportive peer relationships significantly enhance the students' emotional and social wellbeing. Students reported a high degree of acceptance and comfort within their peer groups, contributing to positive self-perception and mental health. The communal environment of the Pesantren, characterized by shared activities and collective experiences, fosters a strong sense of belonging and emotional security. Moreover, the implementation of the Pesantren's foundational principles, such as Panca Jiwa, Panca Jangka, and Panca Bina, plays a crucial role in promoting a nurturing and inclusive environment. This study concludes that fostering strong peer relationships in educational settings like Pesantren is essential for the holistic development of students. The findings underscore the importance of creating supportive and inclusive social environments to enhance student well-being, with implications for educational practices and policies in similar contexts. This research contributes to the broader discourse on student well-being and peer relationships in educational settings by providing a deeper understanding of the social dynamics within Pesantren.Item Open Access High school students’ attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention toward climate change in relation to pro-environmental behavior in Klaten regency Indonesia(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2024) Irkham Zamzuri; Bambang Sumintono; Destina Wahyu WinartiCurrently, human-induced climate change causes difficulties, affecting the environment, health and well-being. Indonesia encounters distinct climate-related problems. It underscores the urgency of comprehensive educational approach. There is a lack of detailed evaluation specifically targeting high school students in Indonesia. The gap may impede the successful promotion of pro-environmental behavior (PEB) among youth generation. The absence of regular monitoring of high school students’ attitude (ATT), subjective norm (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), and behavioral intention (BI) towards climate change hinders effort to improve educational programs or initiatives in Indonesia. The objective of the study is evaluating the ATT, SN, PBC, and BI of high school students in Klaten Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia about the climate change in relation to PEB. It aims to examine the correlation between these variables and their impact on PEB. The study employed a quantitative research approach within a positivist paradigm, non-experimental with crosssectional design. The data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 1,336 students. The questionnaire included Likert-type scales to measure the constructs of interest. Data were analyzed using the Rasch Model Measurement, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, DIF analysis, correlational tests, and multiple regression analysis. The study reveals significant insights into high school students' ATT, SN, PBC, and BI towards climate change, and their influence on PEB. Descriptive statistics indicated that students generally exhibit moderate to high levels of PEB, with variations based on gender and school type. Female students and those from senior high schools demonstrated higher levels compared to their counterparts. Correlational analyses showed strong positive associations between SN (r = 0.548), PBC (r = 0.570), and BI (r = 0.533), which are significant predictors of PEB (r = 0.529). Multiple regression analysis confirmed that SN (β = 0.3329, p < 0.001) and PBC (β = 0.3876, p < 0.001) significantly influence BI, which in turn predict PEB (β = 0.2865, p < 0.001). However, ATT alone did not directly affect PEB (β = -0.0303, p = 0.2309), highlighting the critical role of social and control factors in driving environmentally friendly actions among students. The study concludes that enhancing climate change education (CCE) is crucial for fostering proactive attitudes and behaviors among high school students. To promote PEB, the study recommends integrating climate change topics across subjects, adopting gender-sensitive approaches, mandating environmental education at all schooling types, and providing resources and professional development for teachers.Item Open Access Investigating science teacher assessment literacy - understanding, classroom assessment practices, challenges and opportunities : a case study in a madrasah school in Lombok(Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, 2024) Mahurni; Bambang Sumintono; Tati Lathipatud DurriyahOver the past two decades, there has been a mounting concern about the comparison of scholastic achievement of students worldwide, including Indonesia. OECD has disclosed PISA assessment results showing a global decline in student performance in the domains of reading, mathematics, and science. In an educational index, 21 provinces in Indonesia, including NTB is the position of under 50% of educational attainment index, even worse in some districts if looking at the results of ANBK and UTBK, a kind of national public examination, for some latest years. These low levels of performance have been attributed to various factors: teacher-student relationships, quality teachers, the socioeconomic status of students, the use of information and communication technology, and the implementation of metacognitive methods. Quality teachers are really matters. This is in line with syntheses of 500,000 research articles asserting that one of many factors contributing to the success of students’ performance is teachers’ quality in elements of teaching and assessment competency. Regarding the teacher’s assessment competency, there are limited numbers of study dealing with this concern in Indonesia, particularly in science teachers. Thus, this study wantsto investigate Madrasah Schoolscience teachers’ assessment literacy. Thisresearch employed a qualitative approach using descriptive case study design in one of private madrasah schools in West Lombok, NTB. It involves three teacher participants from three different subjects to get their conception, assessment practice, factor of the designing and implementing assessment, along with their constraints and opportunity. Observation along with documentaries and interviews were used to collect the data, and the analysis of the data using inductive and deductive thematic analyses. Findings depict that the teachers have (1) sufficient conception regarding the assessment literacy – level two and have potential to develop further; (2) some considerations in designing and implementing the formative assessments; (3) two to three types of assessment used in their classroom teaching based on the assessment principles and approaches; and (4) challenges on students’ readiness and learning sources. Based on empirical and theoretical perspectives from peer-reviewed journal articles, the study has found that different countries in this region have salient emphasis. Previous literature has highlighted several methodological approaches employed in the school climate domain, including longitudinal studies. However, little is known about the validity and reliability of school climate instruments for longitudinal studies using Rasch analysis. Rasch model is a powerful approach to validate assessment on both item and test levels. Rasch model is coined from the probability of each response and includes item difficulty parameters to characterize the measured items. Moreover, the score represents the item and the person involved with the assessment. Thus, the current study aimed to validate school climate instruments for longitudinal studies with a six-month gap within the context of secondary school students by utilising Rasch analysis. This study evaluated aspects of reliability and validity, such as unidimensionality, rating scale analysis, item fit statistics, item targeting, and differential item functioning. A total of 1,495 secondary school students from public schools in Selangor, Malaysia, completed a 28-item Malay version of the school climate survey at Time-1 and Time-2, with a six-month gap. The results of the Rasch analysis indicated that the instrument had excellent reliability and separation indices, excellent unidimensionality and construct validity, a functional rating scale, good item-person targeting, and good item fit statistics. The current findings provided valid and reliable insights pertinent for policymakers to strategise interventions and initiatives to enhance the quality of school climate and overall education, particularly in the Asian context.Item Open Access Measuring changes in hydrolysis concept of students taught by inquiry model : stacking and racking analysis techniques in Rasch model(Elsevier, 2022-03-18) Lukman Abdul Rauf Laliyo; Bambang Sumintono; Citra PanigoroThis research aimed to employ stacking and racking analysis techniques in the Rasch model to measure the hydrolysis conceptual changes of students taught by the process-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) model in the context of socio-scientific issues (SSI) with the pretest-posttest control group design. Such techniques were based on a person- and item-centered statistic to determine how students and items changed during interventions. Eleventh-grade students in one of the top-ranked senior high schools in the eastern part of Indonesia were involved as the participants. They provided written responses (pre- and post-test) to 15 three-tier multiple-choice items. Their responses were assessed through a rubric that combines diagnostic measurement and certainty of response index. Moreover, the data were analyzed following the Rasch Partial Credit Model, using the WINSTEPS 4.5.5 software. The results suggested that students in the experimental group taught by the POGIL approach in the SSI context had better positive conceptual changes than those in the control class learning with a conventional approach. Along with the intervention effect, in certain cases, it was found that positive conceptual changes were possibly due to student guessing, which happened to be correct (lucky guess), and cheating. In other cases, students who experienced negative conceptual changes may respond incorrectly due to carelessness, the boredom of problem-solving, or misconception. Such findings have also proven that some students tend to give specific responses after the intervention in certain items, indicating that not all students fit the intervention. Besides, stacking and racking analyses are highly significant in detailing every change in students’ abilities, item difficulty levels, and learning progress.Item Open Access Mental health condition of vocational high school students during COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia(Elsevier, 2023-02-11) Very Julianto; Bambang Sumintono; Thifal Maida Wilhelmina; Nandia Putri Zuhdi Almakhi; Hana AvetazainThis study aimed to determine the mental health condition of vocational high school students in Indonesia during the pandemic using the Rasch analysis method with the DASS-42 instrument. A total of 1381 vocational students in Indonesia participated in this study through the questionnaire. The results showed that more than 60 % of Indonesian vocational students experienced mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic due to social restrictions, and online learning. Untuk mencapai matlamat ini, budaya bekerja secara individu perlu digantikan dengan gerak kerja kolaboratif melalui satu konsep yang tidak asing lagi iaitu konsep ‘Komuniti Pembelajaran Profesional’ (KPP). Oleh itu, tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk meneroka tahap pelaksanaan KPP dalam populasi sepuluh Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA (KKTM) di Malaysia. Menggunapakai reka bentuk kajian kes kualitatif, data dikumpul melalui teknik temu bual separa berstruktur dan soalan tinjauan terbuka dengan penglibatan 16 orang pemimpin pendidikan (atau Educational Leader, EL) dan 47 orang pendidik daripada keseluruhan empat buah kolej KKTM yang dipilih secara bertujuan bagi menjayakan kajian ini. Dapatan kajian mendapati tahap pelaksanaan KPP dalam konteks empat kolej KKTM ini dapat dicirikan kepada enam dimensi iaitu 'Autonomi terkawal’, 'Kepentingan perkongsian nilai visi & misi', ‘Mengamalkan pendekatan kolektif untuk penambahbaikan', ‘Pendekatan kolektif ke arah perkongsian peribadi’, 'Sokongan dalam bentuk fizikal / perhubungan' dan 'Sokongan dalam bentuk struktur'. Seterusnya, dapatan ini berupaya memberikan implikasi praktikal dan cadangan untuk penyelidikan masa hadapan dalam melaksanakan KPP dalam konteks TVET MARA di KKTM khususnya dan Malaysia amnya.
